Helidon Gjergji  Art Teacher

helidon_gjergjiHelidon Gjergji was born in Albania, where he first studied art and earned a BFA from the Academy of Arts in Tirana. Then he moved to Italy, where he obtained a second degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, Italy. When he came to USA, he earned an MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University.
Helidon has taught art and art history for over 20 years in places like the State University of New York, Parsons, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Northwestern University, and has lectured about his work at Harvard University, Teachers College - Columbia University, Université du Québec, American University in Dubai, etc.
Over the course of his career Helidon has worked in a variety of mediums and has exhibited his work internationally at many distinguished venues such as Venice Biennale and the Festival of Ideas of the New Museum in New York. He has organized several exhibitions, among which Tirana Open, an international contemporary arts festival of the visual arts, film, architecture, music, and literature, where he was the Artistic Director. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Sculpture, Flash Art, Reuters, Swedish Public Radio, Malta Public TV etc. Helidon’s artistic work has been supported by many grants, such as: Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (twice), City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Institute for Philosophical Studies in Naples, Italy.
