Kevin M., Alejandro Y., Alex M., Helena H., Leonard Y., and Sreya S. competed this past November at the annual Junior/Senior Design Challenge at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). This competition typically lasts two to three hours and involves a MacGyver-style problem-based challenge that students work together to solve. Due to the pandemic, however, our team was given two days to complete the challenge and their solution was then mailed to the judges for evaluation. This year, the organizers challenged each team to design and construct primary packaging that could safely contain Covid-19 vaccines (represented by unbroken pretzel sticks) through the mail. Not only did the PRISMS team rise to the occasion by designing a novel laser-cut cardstock enclosure to protect the “vaccines,” they earned 3rd place! The PRISMS team looks forward to competing again next year in this fast-paced design-based challenge.
